An excerpt from my
Blog:
This past 4-day Memorial Day weekend
Ken and I went to Cordova!
What an awesome time we had!! Cordova
is such a cool little town and the only two ways to
get there are by ferry or plane. You can not get there by car. That is
so cool! Juneau, the state capital is the same way. Actually many
towns and villages in Alaska are accessible only by plane.
During our 4-day stay in
Cordova we ate--no big
mystery there, and visited Childs glacier, which by the way is the most
active glacier in Alaska. You are guaranteed to see it calving during
your visit, and we
did, but they were only baby calves. Does that make sense? So the road
we traveled on to get to Childs glacier is called Route 10. It starts
off paved then it turns into a gravel road. You travel about 30 miles
or so and hit the
Million Dollar Bridge, which was built back in the
early 1900s. About 1/4 mile past the bridge, the road ends. The road
and bridge were originally built to for the train. But that went out
of service, not sure how long ago. Now the bridge is a tourist
attraction, but not for many people. I hopefully will post pictures
from that trip online one of these days.
(editor's note: apparently they are
posted)
As cool as
Cordova was to visit, I wouldn't want to live
there, only because it is so isolated! I like Anchorage. It is a big
city but has a small town feel to it. I've never lived anywhere where
I hung out at the town center with the mayor. Well I didn't actually
hang out with him, just in the same vicinity. Ken one day went into a
local grocery store and saw Senator Ted Stevens buy his morning
coffee.
